The Finnish Baby Box: How America Can Become A Benevolent Dictatorship

It’s easy!

Since 1938, the Finnish government has provided expectant mothers with a “baby box.”

It’s exactly what it sounds like; a cardboard box featuring a cozy little baby mattress and all the supplies a mother would need to care for her newborn. All she has to do is visit a state-run maternity clinic, undergo an exam, and she’s provided with the tools she needs to care for an infant.

Since the program’s implementation, Finland now boasts one of the lowest infant mortality rates in the world. As of 2021, Finland has 2.8 infant deaths per 1000 births.

Compare that to the United States, which suffers 5.8 deaths per 1000 births, ranking 33rd out of 38 OECD countries according to statistics from americashealthrankings.org.

Granted, the United States has a larger population than Finland, but given America’s status as a “superpower,” that number is shockingly high.
